Major William Hathorne, Puritan, of Salem, Mass., an ancestor of Nathaniel Hawthorne, was involved in the persecution of Quakers and other religious heretics. Rev. Robert Jordan, a priest of the Church of England, came to Richmond's Island, in Maine ca. 1640 and became a landowner in that area. John Higginson (1616-1708) was the son of noted clergyman, Francis Higginson (1586-1630), who brought his family from Claybrook, Leicestershire, England to New England in 1629. Although the younger Higginson seems never to have been ordained, he was appointed to several ministerial positions: Chaplain at Saybrook Fort, Conn., 1636-1639; Asst.
